A new front

SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike delivers an inspired combat experience on PSP.

A new direction for SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs, Tactical Strike introduces an entirely new gameplay format to the series. Assuming command of an entire team of Special Forces operatives, as opposed to an individual member, you're charged with directing and executing the strategy of their engagements. And the selection is not limited to the US Special Forces either; this time on PSP the UK, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, South Korea and the Netherlands join the fray.

Developer Slant Six, the team behind the excellent Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror on PSP, have stealthily crept up to the plate and delivered a genuinely deep and challenging experience on PSP. Although control of your team is indirect, the breadth of commands and how close you feel to the real-time action is staggering.

Against a backdrop of rising instability in South America, your team is deployed to rescue the ambassador to Panama who has been abducted by insurgents. The storyline introduces several mission types, with operations spanning Panama's urban and industrial centres, as well as the jungle surrounding the Panama Canal itself.

Your four-person team is split into Alpha and Bravo fireteams; this means when giving orders you can direct them individually, as a fireteam or all at once. Orders are grouped into movement, attack and inventory use, the latter enabling you to snipe, throw various types of grenades or use medical packs, based upon the equipment they're currently employing.

Within each group of orders there is a range of options available from moving with stealth, or with covering fire from the second fireteam, to defining fields of fire or stealth killing with a knife. Additional orders become available based upon context, from hacking computers and security locks to planting explosives and photographing intelligence. Every action can also be held until the signal is given, letting you coordinate a fireteam breaching a door and clearing a room, with their fellow soldiers smashing in windows and providing suppressing fire for instance.

It is these wide-ranging and flexible options that make Tactical Strike one of the best real-time, tactical combat experiences on PlayStation®. Each mission requires you to plan your tactics carefully and employ stealth and surprise to succeed, providing the closest gameplay yet to the practices of the Special Forces that inspire SOCOM.

Between missions you have the opportunity to develop your team, spending experience earned on skills such as marksmanship and stealth, as well as specialist weapons skills such as heavy weapons or grenades. Additionally, accessing the armoury lets you equip the team with weapons suiting your favourite tactics prior to each mission.

Graphically - and coming from the developer of Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror you would expect no less - Tactical Strike is stunning. From the interiors of warehouses and bunkers to the exterior city and jungle settings, the detail and sense of realism is spot on without hampering the speed of gameplay.

Like any new SOCOM title, Tactical Strike gives you the opportunity to test your multiplayer skills, taking the action online, playing via Infrastructure Mode, or locally via Ad Hoc Mode. The heavy emphasis on tactics and stealth in Slant Six's game making these bouts very different to previous SOCOM titles. A sneaky game of cat and mouse ensues, with each of the combatants tooled up with the latest in state of the art weaponry.

With SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike, Slant Six has approached a PlayStation®classic from a completely new angle. Taking a strong cue from its real-world inspiration, it has created a very tactical game. The result is a gripping and engaging combat experience, which excels at promoting the need to plan and employ stealth.
