Using PC cards that require changes of the COM port
Settings for using PC cards that require changes of the COM port setting.
Disable devices that are not used or change the COM port.
This PC uses hardware resources (such as I/O address) between COM1 and COM4 under the default condition. In case of connecting new peripherals such as PC cards, the hardware resources from COM5 may be allocated to them. Some software is not designed for the peripheral that uses the hardware resources from COM5. For this reason, you cannot use some peripherals correctly. In this case, change the hardware resource of the COM port allocated to the peripheral.
To change the COM port setting, perform either (1) or (2) below.
(1) Disable devices that are not used
Disable the device that is not used, and release the COM port which was used by the device so that another device can use it.
1. Click [Start] and point to [VAIO] - [Assistance], and then click [Sony Notebook Setup].
2. Click [Enable Ports] tab and uncheck the device below which is not used.
# [Serial port (COM1)]
# [IR port]
3. Turn off the PC, connect the device, and then turn on the device and the PC.
An available COM port is allocated to the device.
Check if it is set successfully in Device Manager tab on System Properties.
(2) Allocate COM3
Make COM3 available and allocate it to the device to be connected.
1. Click [Start] and point to [VAIO] - [Assistance], and then click [Sony Notebook Setup].
2. Click [Basic/Advanced] tab and then click [Advanced].
3. Click [Infrared] tab.
4. Change the I/O Address to the address other than "3E8h-3EFh," which does not conflict with other resources.
5. Click [OK].
This makes some applications work incorrectly on infrared communication in some rare cases.
