Software update information for 2015/2016 Android TV™ models - Android™ 8.0 Oreo™

     

    A major software update (Android 8.0 Oreo) is scheduled to begin May 2020 for your Android TV model. This article explains the new features, improvements and changes provided with this update.

    Follow these steps to update the TV software:

    1. Press the HELP button on the remote control.
    2. Select System software update.
    3. Select Check for a system software update and follow the on-screen instructions.

    NOTE: The software update is being rolled out in stages. Because of this, the update may not be immediately available for your TV. If the “Your software is up to date” message appeared on the screen after following the steps above, set the Automatic software download setting feature of the TV to On. A notification will appear once the software update is available for your TV.

    • KD-**X9400D / **X9350D / **X9300D / **S8500D / **X8500D
    • FW-**X8501D
    • KDL-**W950D / **W800D

    2015 models: 

    • KD-**X9400C / **X9300C / **X9100C / **X9000C / **X8500C / **X8300C / **X8000C
    • KDL-**W950C / **W850C / **W800C

    Menu and Interface Changes

     

    1. Home menu changes

     

    • Network-related content appears on the Home menu.
    • Select (Apps) or press and hold the HOME button on the remote control to access your installed apps.
    • Use Play Store to download apps.

       
    •   (Inputs),  (Timers) and  (Settings) are moved to the top-right of the screen for easy access.
    • When you have notifications, an icon with a number indicating the amount of notifications will appear next to the Inputs icon. Select it to see the notifications.

       
    • Help is listed in the Apps menu.

       
    • On 2016 models, the Picture-in-Picture (PIP) small screen, control buttons and information appear in the Home menu. The small screen is located on the bottom-right or bottom-left.
    • If the TV is not connected to a network, an error message such as Unable to access Internet will appear on the Home menu.
      • You can select DISMISS to hide the message temporarily or connect the TV to a network to hide it permanently.
    • Easy access to preferred apps and viewing history:
      • You can add your favorite apps to (A).
      • Partially watched content is automatically added to Play Next (B).
        • You can also manually add content to Play Next.
        • May not be available for all services or content.
        • Will not appear if there is no content.
      • TV channel viewing history and recommended content from video streaming services are displayed in (C).
        • The content displayed changes depending on the status of the TV.

     

    2. Design changes to the Album, Video and Music apps

    When you select an app, the USB device name or the server name on the home network is displayed on the left side of the screen, making it easy to find the file you want to play.

     

    3. Changes to the Language settings

    Country/region descriptions are added to some languages. Different Language settings may work better for certain functions such as the Google Assistant/voice search.

    NEW Features

    Support the Google Assistant

    With the Google Assistant built in, you can ask your Google Assistant to play your favorite movie or TV show, check the score of your favorite team, control your TV, dim the lights and more - using just your voice.

    Features No Longer Supported

    1. One-touch mirroring function (2015 model / KDL-*W950D / KDL-*W800D)

    One-touch mirroring, the function that allows you to mirror your smartphone screen to the TV wirelessly by simply touching the smartphone on the touchpad remote, is no longer available.

    2. PlayMemories Online

    The PlayMemories Online service, originally included in the Album app, is no longer available.
    (Applicable countries/regions: Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan)

    3. Wi-Fi Direct full-time standby function

    Wi-Fi Direct no longer supports the full-time standby function. It connects only when the TV is in the Wi-Fi Direct standby screen.

    4. IPv6 setup

    IPv6 On/Off setting is removed. The TV now automatically supports IPv6.

    5. Removal of the Assamese and Oriya languages from the language setting

    Among the languages of India, the Assamese and Oriya languages are removed. The previous setting of these two language choices will automatically be changed to English.

    Other Changes

    1. Newly added supported formats

    The following formats are added as supported formats for USB or home networks.
    • Photo: .arw (files for simple playback only)
    • Music: .ogg, .aac
    • External subtitles: .sami, .txt

    Playback capability depends on home network server specifications.

    2. Removal of PlayStation™ Video from the lineup of pre-installed apps

    PlayStation Video is removed from the lineup of pre-installed apps. If you want to use it, use the Play Store app to download and install PlayStation Video and then sign in to use it.

      WARNING:

    • Install the update at your own risk.
    • Follow the update instructions carefully.
    • After performing the update:
      • The software cannot be reverted to the previous version
      • Some settings may reset and need to be reconfigured.
      • You may need to update apps from Google Play, etc.
      • Apps for earlier OS versions may not work properly.
