What to do if noisy comes out of VAIO computer after changing microphone settings?

    • For models with Windows XP installed, right click the volume icon Open Volume Control on the right bottom corner of the screen. In the page of Volume Control, unchecking Mute in Microphone and Mute all in Volume Control may generate whistle-type noise.

    • For models with Windows Vista installed, right click the volume icon Sound Record Device, select microphone device, then click Properties, and choose the Level tab in the page of Microphone Properties. Turning up the volumes of Microphone and MIC Boost may generate whistle-type noise.

    ※ Only for the models with internal microphone.
    ※ Whistle-type noise refers to the sounds like boom, buzz and rustle sent out by PC.
    VAIO PC with internal microphone is not designed to play sound via the speaker.
    When microphone closes to the speaker, the abnormal noise is caused by resonance between the microphone and the speaker. This situation is called whistle-type effect.
    Therefore, whistle-type noise will rise when your PC with internal microphone plays the sound through the speaker.

    This noise is unavoidable due to the design specification of VAIO PC.

    Please use an earphone when playing internal microphone sound, try your best not to make the sound absorbed by the internal microphone.
    In addition, when whistle-type noise rises, please refer to the operation steps below.

    1. Right click the Volume Control on the right botton corner of the screen.
      And then refer to the steps below.

    2. Check Mute in Microphone.

    1. Right click the Speaker icon Open Volume Control on the right botton corner of the screen.

    2. Click Option, and then click Properties.

    3. Then, the Properties dialogue box appears.
      Check Recording in Adjust volume for and confirm that you have checked Microphone in Show the following volume controls.

    4. Click Ok.

    5. Then, the Recording Control dialogue box appears.
      Confirm Select is checked and set a random volume.

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

    2. Click Hardware and Sound.

    3. Click Sound.

    4. Click Recording tab, select Microphone, and then click Properties.


    5. Click Level tab, left drag the scroll bars in Microphone tab and Microphone Volume tab to turn down the volume.
      ※ Initialize the setting of 0.0dB in Microphone Boost tab.


    6. Click OK to close the page.

    In addition, even after the above-mentioned operations, if you set the following volumes high values in the page of Speakers/Earphones Properties, whistle-type noise may still exist.

    • Speaker/Earphone Properties
    • Microphone

    On this condition, adjust all values to the values which won’t cause whistle-type noise in the page of Speakers/Earphones Properties.

    4. Click Playback tab, select Speakers/Earphones, and then click Properties.
