What should the user do when cannot connect the computer to the Internet with the built-in modem?
User cannot connect the computer to the Internet with the built-in modem.
When user try to connect the computer to the Internet, an error message appears.
Check the symptom with the user in reference to the following error messages.
Error: 602
The Modem is being used by another Dial-Up Network connection or another program. Disconnect the other connection or close the program and then try again.
When the above error message appears, one of the following problems might occur. Check the settings with the following procedure. The telephone number of the access point is typed in 2-byte character (for Korean or Chinese OS models only).
Procedure
1. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the icon Dial-Up Networking.
3. Right-click the connection icon used for the Internet connection and click Properties from the displayed menu.
4. If the numbers entered in the Area Code list box and the Telephone Number text box are 2-byte characters, replace them with 1-byte characters.
When another application is using the modem
- Check if the icon that shows the connection status exists already in the task bar.
- Finish all programs and turn off the computer. Restart the computer to see if it can connect to the Internet.
Error: 619
Specified port not connected.
If the above error message appears, the telephone line may not be securely inserted to the modular jack.
Check if the telephone line is securely inserted to the line terminal on the back of the computer or to the wall modular jack.
Or the telephone number may be wrong.
Check if the telephone number of the access point of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is correctly typed in.
Error: 628
The port was disconnected.
If the above error message appears, the telephone line may not be securely inserted.
Check if the telephone line is securely inserted to the line terminal on the back of the computer or to the wall modular jack.
Or the telephone number may be wrong.
Check if the telephone number of the access point of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is correctly typed in.
Error: 629
You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed. Double-click the connection to try again.
If the above error message appears, the telephone line may not be securely inserted.
Check if the telephone line is securely inserted to the line terminal on the back of the computer or to the wall modular jack.
And if possible, connect the telephone line directly to the modem from the wall modular jack using the cable less than 5m long and put other electrical devices and cables away from it to avoid noise from them.
* Connection at the communication rate of 56000 bps (56kbps) is susceptible to noise. Setting the communication rate to a lower value helps to achieve more stable connection.
Furthermore, the checkbox of TCP/IP may be turned off in the settings of Dial-Up Networking connection.
To turn on the checkbox of TCP/IP, refer to the following procedure.
Procedure
- In the case of Windows® 2000
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
2. Right-click the icon that use for the dial-up connection and click Properties from the displayed menu.
3. Click Networking tab.
4. Turn on the checkbox of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click OK. Close the displayed window.
- In the case of Windows® Me
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel and double-click the icon of Dial-up Networking.
2. Right-click the icon that use for the dial-up connection and click Properties from the displayed menu.
3. Click Networking tab.
4. Turn on the TCP/IP checkbox of Allowed network protocols.
5. Click OK. Close the displayed window.
- In the case of Windows® 98SE and Windows® 98
1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2. Double-click the icon of Dial-Up Networking
3. Right-click the icon that use for the dial-up connection and click Properties from the displayed menu.
4. Click Server types tab.
5. Turn on the TCP/IP checkbox of Allowed network protocols.
6. Click OK. Close the displayed window.
Error: 630
The computer is not receiving a response from the modem. Check that the modem is plugged in, and if necessary, turn the modem off, and then turn it back on.
If user still have the problem, refer to the trouble-shooting of Windows® 98 Help.
When the above error message appears, the computer may possibly fail to select the correct modem driver.
Right-click the dialup icon, and click Properties.
When the DialUp Properties appears, click the General tab to check whether the correct modem driver is selected in the Connect using box.
Error: 633
The modem is not installed or configured for Dial-Up Networking. To check the modem configuration, double-click the Modem icon in Control Panel.
The port is already in use or is not configured for remote access dial out.
- In the case of Windows® 98* and Window® Me

- In the case of Windows® 2000
User may try to make connection even when established
connection already.
Close the dialog box of the error message and check if can browse Web
pages, or send and receive e-mails.
Error: 635
Can't establish a dial-up networking session. Check your server type settings in the properties of the connection and try the connection again.
The above error message may appear sometimes when clicked on the Cancel button on the login window prompting the input of the user name and password during connection.
If Error 645 appears even though user have not clicked the Cancel button, user may try to establish connection with a wrong login ID or password.

- The following error messages appear when the user tried to connect his Internet Explorer 5.0 pre-installed computer to the Internet through the dialup networking.
Error numbers and messages may vary when the user tried to connect the computer to the Internet with Internet Explorer 4.0 through DialUp Connections.
- Please note that error numbers and messages may vary depending on models and the environments of computers.
Error: 645
Dial-up networking could not complete the connection to the server. Check your configuration and try the connection again.
If the above error message appears, check the login ID and password.
The connection icon of Dial-Up Networking may be damaged. Create a new connection icon.
Error: 650
The computer you are dialing in to does not respond to a network request. Check your server type setting in the properties of the connections.
If the above error message appears, negotiation might fail.
Re-install TCP/IP. For further details, refer to the following relevant solution.
Error: 651
Your modem (or other device) reported an error.
When the above error message appears, the modular jack may not be securely inserted.
Check if the modular jack is securely inserted to the LINE terminal on the back of the computer or to the wall outlet.
Or, the telephone number may be wrong.
Check if the telephone number of the access point of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is correctly entered.
Error: 666
Your modem (or other device) is not functioning.
When the above error message appears, the driver may not be properly installed or the modem may not be functioning normally.
Check if another application is using the modem. If the problem persists, try to reinstall the modem driver.
Error: 676
The line is busy. Try again later.
When the above message appears, the settings of tone dial and pulse dial may have been erroneously made.
When the phone line uses tone dial, turn on the option button of Tone dial from Dialing Properties.
When it uses pulse dial, turn on the option button of Pulse dial.
Or, the phone line may be set to dial-zero for the outgoing message.
When the phone line does not require dial-zero for the outgoing message, double-click the dialup icon, and then click the Dialing Properties button.
On the Dialing Properties window, check if 0 or other numbers are typed in for local calls, dial and For long distance calls, dial in the box of When dialing from here.
When the phone line requires dial-zero for the outgoing message, type necessary numbers in the X of For local calls, dial X and For long distance calls, dial X in the box of When dialing from here.
Error: 678
There is no answer. Try again later.
* Or, the voice-mail message saying, The number you called is not in use now. comes out.
When the above message appears, the modular jack may not be securely plugged in.
Check if the modular jack is securely plugged into the LINE terminal on the back of the computer and the modular jack of another end of the telephone line is plugged into the wall outlet.
Note:
If there are such devices relaying the telephone signals to the computer as a telephone, a FAX and a TA, check again their connections in reference to their instruction manuals.
Incorrect connections may cause troubles.
Or, the telephone number may be wrong.
Check if the telephone number of the access point of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) is typed correctly.
Error: 680
There is no dial tone. Make sure your modem is connected to the phone line.
When the above error message appears, the checkbox of Wait for dial tone before dialing may have been checked.
To turn off the checkbox of Wait for dial tone before dialing, refer to the following procedure.
Note:
If the above error occurs in the settings of Dial without waiting for dial tone, the modular cable (telephone line) is not properly connected in most cases.
Check if the modular cable is securely inserted to the LINE terminal on the back of the computer or to the wall outlet.
If there are such devices relaying the telephone signals to the computer as a telephone, a FAX and a TA, check again their connections in reference to their instruction manuals.
Incorrect connections may cause troubles.
Procedure
1. Click My Computer and double-click DialUp Networking
2. Right-click on DialUp Networking and click Properties
3. When DialUp Properties appears, click the General tab, and click the Configure button in the Connect Using box.
4. When Sony Internal Modem Properties appears, click the Connection tab and turn off the checkbox of Wait for dial tone before dialing. in the Call preferences box.
* Turn on the above checkbox when wanted to set the modem to Wait for dial tone before dialing.
Error: 691
The computer you are dialing in to cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password, and then try again.
- In the case of Windows® 2000
When the above message appears, check if a wrong user ID or password is entered.
When this does not solve the problem, Sony recommend user to check it with the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- In the case of Windows® XP
When the above error message appears, the user name or the password may be wrong.
Check if a wrong user name or password is entered or not.
If a wrong user name or password is not entered, Require the secured password may be enabled erroneously in the Security Options box of dialup connections.
Refer to the following procedure to check the settings:
1. Click Start, click Connect to and select Dial-up Connections Name2. Click Properties in the dialog box of Connect (Dial-up Connections Name).
3. Click the Security tab in the dialog box of (Dial-up Connections Name) Properties.
4. Select Allow unsecured password from the list box of Validate my identity as follows in the Security Options box and click OK

If the above error message appears, TCP/IP may become unstable. Re-install TCP/IP.

When the above error message appears, the user name or the password may be wrong.
Check if a wrong user name or password is entered or not.
If a wrong user name or password is not entered, Requires secured password may be enabled erroneously in the Security Options box of dialup connections.
