Question

There is no picture when using an HDMI connection.

Answer

IMPORTANT: System software (firmware) updates are available for certain LCD Televisions. Visit the download section of this Web site to find out if an update is available for your TV. If the issue continues after the update is completed, follow the steps in this solution.

There are a few reasons why no picture may appear when using an HDMI connection:

  1. The connected device is not set up to send a signal using the HDMI connection.
  2. The connected device is sending out a video signal in a format that is not compatible with the TV.
  3. The connected device cannot be used with HDMI repeaters.
  4. The HDMI cable may be bad or there is a loose connection.
  5. The connected device is not supported for use with HDMI repeaters.

NOTE: An HDMI repeater is a device (such as an A/V reciever) that receives an audio/video signal from one HDMI device and passes it through to another connected HDMI device. While Sony products are supported for use with HDMI repeaters, products from other manufacturers may not be supported.
  6. If an A/V receiver is being used, it may be not capable of sending an analog signal via HDMI.

NOTE: Not all A/V receivers are capable of up-converting analog signals to HDMI, even if the receiver has an HDMI-out jack. If the A/V receiver cannot up-convert analog signals to HDMI, signals from components connected via an analog connection (coaxial, composite A/V, S-Video or component video) will not be transmitted through the HDMI cable to the television. You may need to connect your A/V receiver to the television with an additional analog cable to view video from a video source, such as a DVD player or set-top box, that is connected to the receiver with an analog cable. Refer to the operating instructions included with your A/V receiver for more information.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this issue.

  1. Turn off the TV and connected device.
  2. Make sure the HDMI cable is securely connected at both ends.
  3. Turn the TV and connected device back on.
  4. Reset the TV to factory settings.

NOTE: For model-specific information regarding the reset procedure, refer to the supplied operations guide. Manuals are available online in the Manuals section of the Sony Support Web site.
  5. Make sure the TV is set to the correct video input to receive the HDMI signal.
  6. Make sure the connected device is configured to output through the HDMI connection and that the video format being output is compatible with the TV.

IMPORTANT: Some devices may be able to output a 1080/24p or 1080/30p video signal, whereas some TVs can only accept a 1080/60p video signal. Changing the video output format of the device may resolve the issue. If necessary, consult the instruction manual of the device or contact the device manufacturer for further information about changing the video output format.
  7. If the source device and the TV have a setting called BRAVIA® Theater Sync or HDMI-Control, turn on the Control for HDMI of the component before turning on the Control for HDMI of the TV.

NOTE: To confirm if the control for HDMI feature is working, check the Device List of the TV to see if the component is displayed. For more information about accessing the device list refer to the operating instructions supplied with the TV.
  8. Since some devices do not support HDMI repeaters, make sure the device is connected directly to the TV.
  9. Since some A/V receivers cannot up-convert analog signals to HDMI, connect the receiver to the television with an additional analog cable.
  10. Try using a different HDMI cable.
