Question

Troubleshoot a TV that does not produce any audio when using a DIGITAL AUDIO (OPTICAL) OUT connection.

Answer

The DIGITAL AUDIO (OPTICAL) OUT jack on Sony® televisions will only output digital sound when a broadcast with a digital audio signal (PCM or Dolby Digital® technology) is being received by the television tuner through the VHF/UHF or CABLE input. If the television broadcast does not contain a digital audio signal, then no sound will be heard through this connection. A secondary analog connection should be established to pass analog audio signals to an A/V stereo receiver.

IMPORTANT: Sound being input to the television through High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI®) connection or other inputs may not be output through the DIGITAL AUDIO (OPTICAL) OUT jack of select Sony Televisions.
