How to change a drive letter in Windows XP?

Question

Change a drive letter in Windows XP.

Answer

Follow this procedure to change the drive letter.

IMPORTANT: This procedure must be performed while logged in as Administrator or to an account with Administrator rights.

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel .
  2. In the Control Panel window, under Pick a category, double-click the Performance and Maintenance icon.
  3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, under or pick a Control Panel icon, double-click the Administrative Tools icon.
  4. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click the Computer Management icon.
  5. In the Computer Management window, in the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
  6. Right-click the drive or partition that needs to be changed.
  7. On the menu, click Change Drive Letter or Path.
  8. In the Change Drive Letter and Path for x: window, click the Change button.
  9. In the Edit Drive Letter or Path window, next to Assign a drive letter:, click the down arrow and select the new drive letter.
  10. Click the OK button.
  11. In the Confirm window, click the Yes button.

    NOTE: It is not possible to change the drive letter to one that is already being used, or one that is mapped to the computer.
