What is the Exchangeable image file format (Exif)?

Applicable Products and Categories of This Article

Exchangeable image file format (Exif) is a standard for storing interchange information in image files, especially those using JPEG compression. Most digital cameras now use the Exif format.

There are two versions of the Exif standard:

  • Exif 2.2 ( Exif Print ) is a global standard for digital photo printing that is used to send data such as shooting conditions and scene information from a digital camera to a printer. This information allows Exif Print-compatible printers to automatically adjust the image settings for optimal printing.

  • Exif 2.1 records information about basic shooting conditions but does not supply the additional information that allow the printer to automatically adjust the image settings.
